Unfinished Business

Sometimes I am caught up
In all there is to do
In all the bustling, rustling noise of the season
Of the year, coming in for a landing
I’m not ready!
I say to myself
My brow furrowed and my heartbeat
Telling me that it can’t be time
That I need more time
That the time to rest
To be with you, can’t have come yet
Because I haven’t done enough
I’m not ready!
In those moments
When I’m caught up
In all there is --
In all I think there is to do
I forget you; I postpone you
I see that now
I see you now
I say this now
To remind myself of this truth
Whether for a season or more,
Life’s endings don’t wait for us to finish
What we’ve set ourselves in store
In the end, I realize that
I’m not ready
Doesn’t really matter
Sometimes we must accept
The unfinished business of our lives
In order to truly embrace living
Whether ready or not
It is time for the noise
Insisting I complete my rounds
To take its rightful place in the back seat
And wait its turn
So, I can return
To what means the most to me
You.
